Contraception counselling is a fundamental component of then family planning service at Doctor Now and our GP team consult with patients to understand their individual preferences, medical history and lifestyle factors. In addition to contraception counselling, Doctor Now run regular Family Planning Clinics for the insertion and removal of contraceptive devices such as coils and implants. Below is a summary of the type of family planning procedures we offer:

  • Insertion intrauterine device (Mirena/Jaydess/T-safe/Nova-T) A vaginal speculum is used to visualise the cervix (neck of the womb) and a small, thin, T-shaped device is inserted into the womb.
  • Removal intrauterine device A vaginal speculum is used to visualise the cervix (neck of the womb) and the threads of an intrauterine device are used to pull the device out of the womb.
  • Insertion subdermal implant After using some local anaesthetic a small plastic rod is inserted under the skin in the upper arm.
  • Removal subdermal implant After using some local anaesthetic, a small incision in the skin is made with a scalpel and the implant removed with forceps.
  • Depo-provera injection A hormone progesterone is injected into the muscle of the buttock.
